Understanding Mental Health
The presentation “Understanding Mental Health” explores maintaining well-being in today’s unpredictable society. It covers:
Definition of Mental Health: Referencing the World Health Organization, mental health is defined as a state where individuals realise their abilities, handle life’s stresses, work productively, and contribute to their community.
Influences on Mental Health: Social isolation, economic instability, and limited resource access can negatively impact mental and physical well-being.
Recognizing Signs of Struggle: Signs include mood, behavior, physical appearance, cognitive changes, and sleep/appetite alterations.
Approaching and Supporting: The importance of empathy, active listening, and the TREE method—Thank, Reflect, Establish, Empower—are emphasized for meaningful support.
Breathwork and Self-Care: Breathwork can reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and improve overall well-being. Self-care practices like regular exercise, healthy eating, and sleep are vital for mental health maintenance.
The session concludes with a quiz and practical questions to reinforce understanding.
