Film Screening & Discussion: One More Cup of Coffee for Ambe'
Discovered on Todo.Today, for more events in Ubud
The Torajan people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, live in a culture where death is not seen as an end but as an extension of life itself.
Directed by Shinta Retnani (Asa Film), this ethnographic film explores how followers of the Aluk to Dolo belief system who have recently converted to Christianity approach death. It contrasts the funeral practices of two families, one middle class and one upper class, both deeply devoted to honouring their late fathers. While the upper-class family holds an elaborate funeral with 170 sacrificed buffaloes, the middle-class family struggles to gather enough buffaloes for their ceremony.
Does this gap reflect a difference in cultural practice, or does it raise the question of whether material wealth equals love for a father?
Set within a rich cultural context that values tradition, sacrifice, and social status, the film invites us to reflect on a deeper question: how do we see death in our own lives?
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director. Gather at Usada's second floor.
